What do you grow/produce at Chiguru Farm?

Our focus is on self-sustenance in terms of food as well as financial. We grow almost everything required for our regular food. This includes grains like ragi, dals like toordal (redgram), urad dal (black gram), moong dal (green gram), alasande/lobia (cowpea), avarekayi (hyacinth bean), spices like turmeric and mustard, sesame, etc. apart from varieties of fruits and some vegetables. We also focus on eating what grows naturally in the farm like drumstick leaves, hongone soppu, amatekayi, sundekayi, etc. After keeping sufficient quantity for our internal use, we sell the excess produce either directly or as finished products (like cold pressed oil, powders/flours, pickle, etc).

Agri-tourism projects are exempted from the requirement of FSSAI certificate in Karnataka. Also the farm produce is sold directly to the end customers and therefore there is no requirement for FSSAI certificate.

There are hardly any mosquitoes in the farm although there could be a few at dusk. There could/should be other insects in the farm, but the rooms are well isolated from them with mesh on the windows. Despite that, it is still possible to find insects/frogs/lizards/spiders etc in and around the rooms as we don’t want to interfere too much into their lives!

Which is the best time to visit Chiguru Farm?

You can read our blogpost http://chigurufarms.blogspot.com/2021/02/when-is-best-time-to-visit-chiguru-farm.html on this topic.

Can you elaborate on the “Fruit Picking”?

Our “Food Forest” ensures that there is something or the other to pluck from the trees/plants throughout the year. However, each season is different and seasons are changing too. And some seasons will have more fruits and some other seasons have more pulses and grains, as mentioned in the blogpost above. Some fruits will not ripe on the tree and we have to pluck and ripen them and therefore not possible to pluck and taste directly from the trees. Although “Fruit Picking” is ONE of the activities, visits to our farm don’t start and end with “Fruit Picking” ONLY. If you are looking for “Fruit Picking” only, this is NOT the place.

Can we pluck and take the fruits back home? Is there a limit?

A limited number of items can be taken back home and that amount is left to individual’s discretion, making sure that we don’t end up loss-making due to it! However, if you want bigger quantities, we request you to buy them from us.

Can we also pluck vegetables?

Chiguru Farm doesn’t focus on growing vegetables. However self-sustenance in food is achieved by growing field crops (like toordal, urad dal, moong dal, alasande, avarekayi, etc) in monsoon which also can be used fresh for cooking. We also try to use the vegetables and greens that come up without any “cultivation” in our cooking. This includes things like drumstick leaves, hongone soppu, anne soppu, raw jackfruit, raw banana, amatekayi (Indian hogplum), sundekayi (Thai brinjal) etc. If these interest you are if they are available at the moment of your visit, you are free to pickup a few of them.

Are you willing to host corporate outings/events?
Yes, provided the FAQs in this page are read and accepted.

Can we work-from-farm?

Yes, you can work from farm now as we have JioFi offering decent internet speed. However, if you have Airtel connection and you need to take/make voice calls, it is not possible. We only get Jio and BSNL signal properly in the farm.

Do you have any half-day OR “few-hours-only” trips OR any options without food?

We have recently introduced half day trip option, However, as you will spend at least 3 hours on road to come and go-back, it doesn’t make sense to visit us for a few hours only. Our place is spread across 15-acres and we have a lot of varieties of crops and our farm tours are educational. Considering these points, we don’t offer any trips for few hours only.

The entire focus here is on education and farm-fresh food. So it doesn’t make sense to look for visits without food. And there are no other place in the vicinity for food. But if you insist on visiting us without food, you are welcome. However our pricing doesn’t change because of this.

What about safety?

Chiguru Farm is surrounded by solar electric fence. But being on the edge of Bannerghatta National Park and next to the elephant corridor, there are possibilities of encountering elephants and other wild elephants on the way. Elephants, once in a while have strayed into the farm by breaking the fence, but not affected any human beings. However it is advisable to be voluntarily cautious when you are staying overnight. In general, being a natural space, there could be occasional honeybees, snakes, lizards, mongoose, etc spotted in the farm, and we shall let them be on their own without disturbing them.

Fire extinguishers are fitted in strategic location and we ensure that they are always in working condition

CCTV camera is fitted around the farm house.
